Siddhartha School opened for the new academic year on March 1 and “all the teachers and kids are well” according to a brief note I received from Tenzin Dorjee, one of our English teachers. This despite a late and unexpected snowfall with colder temperatures that caused all Indian government schools and some private schools to extend their winter vacations for five more days.

Right now temperatures at the school in Stok, which is at a comparatively low elevation (about 11,500 feet!), are ranging from lows of -11C (12F) to highs around 3C (38F). As in most public buildings and private homes in Ladakh, there is no central heating at the school. This is why there is no school in the colder months.

The junior classes at Siddhartha School — nursery school through Upper Kindergarten — will start as scheduled on March 10th.

Apparently these cold temperatures have not dampened the spirit at Siddhartha School, since yesterday Vivek, the international secretary at the school, emailed me saying, “The school reopened on 1st March and all is well at the school. Both the children and teachers were eager to come back to school and happy to meet each other after a long winter holiday.”
